SPONDON SPORTSTER
This project began at the local race track when Garry from
Awesome Imports had a couple of spondon frames on display, one
of them being for a sportster motor. A year later an order was
placed and a new sportster sports purchased from Fraser's motorcycles.
The bike was stripped and the parts not needed were sold off
to cover some of the costs of the frame.
It was decided not to go to wild with the engine with more
emphasis on street riding than performance. A set of mild Screaming
Eagle cams were used and the heads cleaned up a little. However,
the fitting of a Mikuni carb dramatically improved engine response
and the bike has enough grunt to put a smile on the rider's
face when giving it a hand full.
The Frame is a work of art and came with a hand beaten aluminium
tank, Ohlins rear shock, rear set and swing-arm. Even the mounting
holes lined up with the engine. It is still a solid mount frame
so engine vibrations are similar to a normal sportster.
The USD forks are from Storz in the states (the legs are
made by Ceriani from Italy) and are machined to bolt up standard
and aftermarket Harley parts. The steering dampener is from
the same company.
Wheels and brakes are from Pro-Formance Machine, 17x 5.5
Chicane rim and Dunlop 180 tyre on the rear, a 17 x 3.5 and
Dunlop rubber up front.
The exhaust system was a major sticking point. At first
a Vance and Hines 2 into 1 sporty system was matted up but looked
like it should be attached to the roof of a house. The battery
was moved to under the seat leaving room on the right hand side
to run the pipes high up. Also the headers now ran inside the
frame giving a much tidier finish.
The seat unit is off a 916 Ducati, front guard from a Monster
and the headlights supplied by Buell. All other parts are Harley-
Davidson.
With a very short wheel base handling is very quick and
nimble and a change of direction is effortless. High bars give
a more relaxed riding position but the rider is able to get
into the bike when pushing harder. Clip-ons would give a more
sports setup.
The bike never fails to attract attention because of its
aggressive, street fighter looks and it is surprising the number
of people who know about Spondon frames. Special thanks must
go to Mick at Road and Race for the fabrication of the one off
bits and his attention to detail. With Spondon just releasing
a new frame for the twin cam motor the owner has the bike up
for sale. If you like something total unique this is it.
